We would love to share with you the experience that we are about to embark in.
Crossing the Atlantic with MOLOKO, a 50 ft Beneteau sailboat, 6 friends, the ocean, the sun, the stars and hopefully some dolphins that we will meet in the way. Final destination Martinique. Arrival day, while unkonwn, expected to be December 18th.
Thru the blog, we will try to share as much as possible our illussions, satisfactions and sucess as well as the expected share of obstacles, concerns and downfalls that the adventure will bring.
The group is made up of 6 members, Juanjo, Fernando, Julio, Ana, Pilar and myself, Reiner.
In the picture find from left to right on top, Julio, Juanjo and myseltf Reiner, then sitting Pilar and in front Ana and Fernando. Ana is assigned to cooking and has requested that, while she is doing her duties, we stay away from the kitchen. The rumors is that she can do magic in the kitchen.
The trip started a few days ago with the departure from Castellon Spain. Juanjo, Fernando and Julio also accompanied by a sailor friend, Jaime, arrived to Las Palmas November 26th, our final meeting point and departure to meet the open ocean.
Pilar, Ana and myself arrived yesterday Nov. 27th. by plane.
Today, November 28th, was used to make the final preparations. Ana and Pilar received the groceries at about 11am purchased the day before. They took the time to set everything in its right place inside the boat while Juanjo and Fernando greased the steering mechanism and put away some of the equipment that was still laying around.
Then we sat around and agreed on the sleeping areas. Since there are 4 rooms and 6 members, after juggling various options, we decided to use 3 room for 2 people each and leave the 4th room as a spare. Since we will be doing watch duty in intervals of 3 hours in couples, most likely no two members will be sleeping at the same time.
But if it happens that two members of the same room take a rest at the same time, then one of the members will take the spare room to sleep.
By around 2pm we were ready to go out for lunch. An experience that, for me is an adventure on itslef while in Spain. White wine, red wine, appetizers that never end coming. When you think that you can’t take another byte, the waiter brings the main dish, spanish rice.
For some strange reason, right when I take a small bite, I conclude that it will be difficult not to say impossible to leave one rice grain on the plate.
Julio rented a van and we took the time to drive and get to know the north coast of Las Palmas. We enjoyed the sunset and noticed the moon shining ¼ up the horizon couple hours before sundown.
Departure is set for tomorrow at 9am as we have to fuel and the gas station opens at that time. I am desperate to take off and hear the keel of the sailboat cutting the waves but I am quickly getting used to the sailors way. Its definitely not about getting there.
Coincidentally, The boat docked next to us will depart also tomorrow to Guadalupe. Its good to know that there will be someone near. We will try to set a time to contact via radio to exchange some information about the day and make sure we are both ok.
The blog will be updated with our satelite phone connection which is very slow. Most likely the updates will be done every couple days.
Until I landed yesteday, it still felt that all this was a dream. While waiting for my luggage and feeling how the dream suddenly became reality, I thought of this:
Dreams become ideas,
ideas become plans,
plans become reality.
Reality turns instantly into memories
And, in time, memories seem to have been dreams.
We can conclude that past becomes a dream,
And we don’t seem to stop dreaming about future.
Who can argue then that Life is but a Dream...
Reiner
